6 things you should know about our corten steel fire pits

The long summer evenings are back again. Is it still a little too chilly to sit outside in the evening? Our fire pits will undoubtedly provide extra warmth and cosiness. We would like to list for you what you should know about our Corten steel fire pits.

1 | Choosing the right surface is important

At the start of the rusting process, Corten steel can leave rust stains on the surface. The most suitable surfaces for Corten steel are therefore grass, pebbles or sand. When the oxidation process is complete (this can take up to one and a half years), the Corten steel no longer stains and can therefore be placed on any surface without problems.

2 | The rust layer protects against corrosion

It is normal for Corten steel to get a rusty layer due to the weather. This rust layer also has a positive effect, it ensures that the steel does not rust through. Of course it is also important that the fire pit is not constantly in or under water. If you take this into account, your fire pit will remain beautiful for many years to come.

3 | Forming the perfect rust layer takes time

There are 4 stages in the oxidation process, our fire pits are in stage 3. They already have a rusty brown colour, but completing the rusting process can take up to a year and a half. It is difficult to estimate the exact duration of the process, as it depends greatly on where the product is standing and on the weather conditions.

4 | Speed up the rusting process? It is possible.

If you don't want to wait that long, you can speed up the process by spraying salt water onto the steel with a plant sprayer. Natural vinegar with water also causes the fire pit to rust more quickly.

5 | The fire pits require no maintenance

Corten steel forms a protective rust layer of its own and requires no further maintenance. Would you like to stop the rusting process after a while? That is possible with the free Owatrol spray which is delivered with your fire bowl. This product blocks rust water forming so that the soil doesn't get damaged. Owatrol also stops the rusting process if you don't want the colour of the fire bowl to continue to change.

6 | Corten steel: a durable raw material

Corten steel has a very long lifetime, it is used in various industries such as shipbuilding, bridge building, ... The Corten steel can also be melted down for recycling, because it is a type of steel without a chemical protective layer.
